Mobil Rarus 424

Mineral oil

Mobil Rarus 400

Ashless mineral oil for single- and multi-stage air compressors: reciprocating, screw, vane and centrifugal.

Choose it when:

  • the compressor runs in normal or severe conditions
  • the compressor maker requires DIN 51506 VD-L oil
  • the oil also lubricates compressor gears and bearings

Mobil Rarus SHC 1026

Synthetic oil

Mobil Rarus SHC 1020

Synthetic oil for screw and vane air compressors in severe service.

Choose it when:

  • you have a screw or vane compressor
  • it runs continuously at discharge up to 200°C
  • mineral oil degrades fast or forms deposits

Synthetic oil

Mobil Rarus 800

Synthetic oil mainly for heavily loaded reciprocating air compressors.

Choose it when:

  • you have a heavily loaded reciprocating compressor
  • deposits build up on the valves
  • you want to cut fire risk in the discharge system

Threat
How the oil protects
  • Carbon on valves and in discharge
Rarus 400 and Rarus 800 form little ash and carbon, so valves work better. The manufacturer recommends Rarus SHC 1020 for compressors where oil formed deposits.
  • Oxidation at high temperature
Synthetic Rarus SHC 1020 and Rarus 800 resist oxidation much better than mineral oils and run continuously at discharge up to 200°C.
  • Fire and explosion risk
Rarus SHC 1020 and Rarus 800 clearly reduce this risk compared with mineral oils.
  • Water from condensate
All three series separate water well, so they form less emulsion and sludge. They also protect the compressor against rust and corrosion.
  • Bearing and gear wear
High oil film strength limits wear of compressor rings, cylinders, bearings and gears.

When to change compressor oil? Test a sample

Sample analysis shows viscosity, oxidation, water and contamination. You change the oil when it is needed, and with a synthetic you get its full longer life. Order from OlejeSklep: compressor oil analysis. How oil analysis works

Jan Kowalski

“Give me the compressor type and model and the discharge temperature. I will tell you whether mineral oil is enough or a synthetic is worth it.”

Questions before you buy

  • Mobil Rarus 400 works in most air compressors. Choose a synthetic for continuous high-temperature service or when mineral oil degrades fast: Rarus SHC 1020 for screw and vane, Rarus 800 for reciprocating.

  • Lower viscosity grades are used mainly in rotary compressors. Rarus SHC 1020 comes in ISO VG 32, 46 and 68, and Rarus 800 in the shop in ISO VG 100 and 150. The compressor manual gives the exact grade.

  • Rarus SHC 1020 and Rarus 800 are compatible with mineral compressor oils, but mixing reduces their performance. Rarus 800 is not compatible with natural rubber and low-nitrile NBR seals. We will help you plan the changeover.

  • No. These series are for air compressors; refrigeration compressor oils are a separate category. The manufacturer does not recommend them for breathing air compressors either.

  • Sample analysis tells you the timing most reliably: viscosity, oxidation and water show whether the oil can keep working. The manufacturer designs the synthetic series for longer oil and filter life.
