In an automatic, clutch operation and smooth shifting depend on the fluid. Harsh shifts and wear start when the fluid loses its friction properties or does not fit the transmission.
Harsh shifts and shudder
Stable friction properties give quiet, smooth shifts. ATF 3309 also helps control transmission shudder.
Fluid that does not fit the transmission type
The manufacturer excludes ATF Multi-Vehicle and CVTF from DCTs, and DCTF from step automatics and CVTs.
Fluid aging at high temperatureOxidation resistance limits sludge and deposits. ATF SHC is for transmissions that run hot and under load.
Cold start
Synthetic fluids flow well at cold start. ATF SHC lubricates even below -40°C.

The transmission type decides: ATF for a step automatic, CVTF for a CVT, DCTF for a dual-clutch box with wet clutches. The vehicle manual gives the transmission type and the required spec.
No. ATF Multi-Vehicle is for 6–8-speed step automatics, not for CVTs or DCTs. Carmakers have not evaluated Multi-Vehicle fluids beyond the listed approvals, so follow the transmission maker’s spec.
ATF 134 has MB 236.14 approval, and ATF 134 FE has MB 236.15 for 7G-Tronic Plus transmissions. ATF 134 FE mixes only with MB 236.15 fluids and does not replace fluids of earlier MB specs.
Some can: the manufacturer also recommends ATF 220 and ATF 320 for power steering and for some manual boxes that require ATF. Check the system maker’s requirements.
