What a good engine oil protects
An engine wears from cold starts, from deposits and from a DPF clogged with oil ash. Oil with the right spec slows these processes.

Clogged DPF or GPF
Mobil 1 ESP is low in ash, sulfur and phosphorus, so it puts less load on the particulate filter and catalytic converter.
Cold start
0W oils, e.g. Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30, reach the engine quickly in frost.
Low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI)
Mobil 1 x1 5W-30 and Mobil 1 FS x2 5W-50 protect turbocharged gasoline engines against LSPI and timing chain wear.
Deposits and sludge
Mobil 1 ESP has active cleaning additives, and Super 3000 Formula V 5W-30 keeps the engine clean on extended drains.

Questions before you buy
The spec in the manual decides, not the oil brand. Super 3000 Formula oils were made for specific carmaker specs, e.g. Renault RN17.
The number with the W describes the oil at cold start, the second number at operating temperature. Take viscosity from the manual; 0W-20 oils are not for older engines.
A low-ash one: Mobil 1 ESP or Super 3000 Formula V, P, R, RN or XE1. Mobil 1 FS and Super 2000 are for engines without a filter.
VW 504 00/507 00: Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30 and Super 3000 Formula V 5W-30, among others. BMW Longlife-04: Super 3000 XE1. Renault RN17: Formula RN.
